L5 AI Leadership Apprenticeship Units
Why choose AI Leadership Apprenticeship Units?
AI is not simply a technology issue – organisations also need leaders who can identify where it could add value, make informed decisions about its adoption and governance, and successfully lead AI-enabled change.
Apprenticeship units offer employers a flexible way to develop these skills without committing employees to a full apprenticeship programme. They provide short, targeted training based on the knowledge and skills within employer-led occupational standards, enabling organisations to respond quickly to emerging skills needs while fitting development around the demands of the workplace.
For participants, the units provide focused development that can be applied directly to real organisational priorities. For employers, they offer a practical, levy-funded way to build AI leadership capability across the workforce and support productivity, innovation and organisational transformation.
They are particularly relevant for those responsible for teams, services, projects, transformation or organisational improvement who need to understand the opportunities presented by AI without becoming technical AI specialists.
- Team Leaders
- Operations Managers
- Department Managers
- Project Managers
- Transformation Managers
- Business Improvement Managers
- Digital Transformation Leads
- Senior Managers
The three AI Leadership Units are:
- AI Strategy & Opportunity – identifying and evaluating opportunities for AI and aligning them with organisational priorities.
- AI Adoption, Procurement & Governance – supporting informed, responsible decisions about AI adoption, procurement and governance.
- AI Delivery & Organisational Transformation – turning AI plans into action and supporting successful organisational and workforce change.
Each unit can be undertaken individually, allowing employers to select the training most relevant to their organisational priorities.

Apprenticeship units
We are also exploring other areas aligned to employer demand and skills priorities, including apprenticeship units.
Apprenticeship units are short flexible training courses designed to support employers to upskill their workforce in critical skill shortage areas. Units are for employed learners aged 19 and over, where their employer has identified that they need to upskill quickly to respond to emerging skills gaps and to support business growth and productivity.
Apprenticeship units are based on relevant knowledge and skills in existing employer-led occupational standards to ensure relevant high-quality, targeted training. Each unit is short, with the length of training ranging from 30 and 140 hours delivered over a period of 1 to 16 weeks. This enables employers to have maximum flexibility to select a unit that meets their specific skill need and to deliver the training in a way that fits around their business.
